Finding Inspiration When You've Hit a Creative Wall

If you are part of The 365 Project, then you've probably already read this little article. But I thought this would still be helpful for those of you who enjoy photography and sometimes get "stuck".

I'd like to point out that I am nowhere near being a professional photographer - this is simply an amateur's take/opinion!

All photos are mine unless otherwise cited...or if you think they're terrible. ;)

Finding Inspiration When You've Hit a Creative Wall

Have you ever not known what to shoot? You look around and nothing says "photograph me"? We've all been there at one time or another. And one of the challenges while doing The 365 Project, at least for me, is keeping the photographs fresh and exciting. This is particularly challenging during the drab days of winter.

Here are some things that may help you get around that wall:

1. Open a magazine.

I use any and all magazines to find inspiration. While I don't recommend copying an idea exactly, they do give us wonderful jumping-off points.

Here's an example:
The image on the left is from a magazine (Parenting, Feb 2010. Photographer: Bernd Vogel) and the image on the right is mine.

2. Ask your kids or someone else to choose a subject for you.

So many times, my son will see something in a way I've never thought about.

3. Go for a walk.

Change up your scenery. Even if it's ridiculously cold outside, bundle up and go! Walk the opposite direction you usually go or drive to a new neighborhood.

4. Aim low or high.

Shoot from a different angle. Sometimes the most mundane shot can be transformed into something pretty cool just by changing the angle. Try laying on the ground or climbing on a ladder to get a whole new perspective.

5. Get up early or stay up late.

This will let you see things in a whole new light - literally! Sunrises and sunsets dramatically change a photograph, as does the glow of the moon.

Now get back out there and keep shooting!

  1. Thank-you! I have hit that brick wall, I don't know what to shoot. I'm actually trying to find some inspiration for my wall. I want to put pictures of the kids on my red wall. Yep I have a special red wall. I want to do all black and white pictures, but I don't know where to shoot them.
    Any ideas?

  2. Melissa - I think b&w on red would look great! If you have a walking trail or gardens close by, that might be a good place to start. You might just want to browse child portraits on Flickr to get some ideas, too.
