Naturally (and not so naturally) Dyed Eggs

I decided to forgo the store bought dye kits and go au natural this Easter for dying our eggs! (or at least I tried.)

I gathered my supplies:

Blown out eggs
(I used the eggs for a casserole, because I am not a waster!)

sweet potato skins, carrot peels, onion skins, tulip petals, can of beets

The only one of these that worked was the onion skins. And they worked GREAT! I was really pleased with how they came out - a deep peachy brown! I put my blown out eggs in a pot, covered them with water (I had to hold them under water so they would fill with water and not float) then threw my onion skins on top. Brought it to a boil and let it simmer for about 20 minutes.

Nothing else worked. Not even the beets - can you believe it?! Those darn things stain counters, but can't dye an egg! Here's a list of various natural things that "should" work for dying.

I had my heart set on colorful eggs (without buying the dye kits) so I turned to food coloring as my last resort. Here are directions for using food coloring.

And I used this egg tree idea for displaying my lovely eggs!

  1. Do you think you had to add something else to make it stick...

I wonder why it didn't work. Inquiring minds want to know...

  2. Oh hey - check this out. This site said you need a drop of vinegar...

  3. Yep, vinegar must be the magic ingredient. I went back and re-read my directions and there it was "1 tbsp of vinegar" - I wouldn't have thought it'd make that big of a difference, but I guess it does!
