Thanks for the helpful comments about what to do with the black squares! I decided to go ahead and stitch some free motion all around the appliqués. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out! I used white thread, but it's not near as noticeable as I thought it would be on the black fabric.
The binding was a little more work than I had anticipated, but I think for a first try it turned out alright...there are definitely a lot of mistakes and my mitering skills leave much to be desired.
(you can see that my backing is a little out of whack - I bought the wrong size cut of fabric and didn't want to drive back across town to get more, so I pieced it together.)
And best of all, it's Rowan approved!
